The history of Hawaiian workwear, which can be considered the origin of the Aloha shirt, began when Japanese immigrants crossed the ocean and started living in Hawaii. The work they did there required durable workwear, rather than the traditional Japanese clothing they had brought from Japan. In 1922, Yasuda Kayoji, born in Japan, founded Union Supply, successfully expanding its business by providing high-quality workwear. The company's palaka check shirts and blouses, while simply made, were durable and easy to move in, quickly gaining popularity and becoming a representative style of palaka.

Founded in 1922 by Yasuda Kayoji, born in Japan, Union Supply expanded its business by providing high-quality, affordable workwear to people who had moved from Japan to Hawaii. This is an actual panel border T-shirt manufactured by an American swimwear manufacturer that has been making wool swimsuits since before the war. Following the method of making wool borders at the time, the round body has a panel-like border, which is not printed but woven. It is thought that the design was created with lifesaving in mind as leisure wear for swimming and the sea, which was more dangerous than today.
