The history of Hawaiian workwear, which can be considered the origin of the Aloha shirt, began when Japanese immigrants crossed the ocean and started living in Hawaii. The work they did there required durable workwear, rather than the traditional Japanese clothing they had brought from Japan. In 1922, Yasuda Kayoji, born in Japan, founded Union Supply, successfully expanding its business by providing high-quality workwear. The company's palaka check shirts and blouses, while simply made, were durable and easy to move in, quickly gaining popularity and becoming a representative style of palaka.

Sun Surf Lot US15905 / UNION SUPPLY 12.5oz. Grade One Ahina Work Jacket
At that time in Hawaii, sturdy workwear was created using indigo-dyed denim fabric called ahina for plantation workers who worked in pineapple and sugarcane fields. The thickness of the fabric changed over time, and many variations have been found, differing in pocket shape and number, the presence or absence of pleats, and the color of the stitching thread.

Tailor Toyo Lot TT15520 / 1950s Souvenir Jacket “KOSHO & CO.” Special Edition “DRAGON & LANDSCAPE” × DRAGON”
In honor of the zodiac sign of 2024, the dragon, the Year of the Dragon collection is a reproduction of a dragon pattern selected from a large number of vintage skajans. This time, as a special edition, Tailor Toyo reprint the "Printed Sukajan", which was only made for a short period of time from the late 1940's to the early 1950's.
The surface is embroidered with two dragons glaring at each other with Mt. Fuji in between. The design is not filled with embroidery, but the black acetate fabric used as the base is used effectively to make the dragon drawn with delicately colored threads stand out. When we look into the materials from the time, we find that it was created by a skilled Japanese embroidery craftsman, and it has a dignified finish that makes it look like a Japanese painting. The original vintage specifications have been reproduced, including the dragon embroidery on the chest, which is larger than usual, and the three lines on the sleeves.
The reversible side has a printed Japan map pattern. Instead of printing using modern machines, printing is done by hand, in which a plate is created one color at a time, and then the plates are printed over and over again by hand.This method requires time, effort, and advanced technology, so it was not possible to print at the time. Very few. Moreover, this design, which features a map of Japan along with castles and landscapes, is especially rare among printed Skajan jackets, and it is no exaggeration to say that it is impossible to obtain on the vintage market. The dragon on the chest is drawn in a size that would be impossible to find on an embroidered Sukajan jacket, and due to its powerful design and vintage rarity, it has been reprinted as a special edition for the Year of the Dragon.

In addition to the detailed designs drawn with horizontal embroidery, the acetate fabric is adjusted to create a vintage-like finish, and the wool ribs are knitted one by one using an old-fashioned flat knitting machine. For the reversible zippers, we restarted the fastening machines that were used more than 50 years ago and recreated the same hand-bending ones that were used back then. Using the label of Kosho Shokai, the predecessor of Taylor Toyo, the finish is reminiscent of the heyday of vintage skajans.

Warehouse & Co. Lot 1097 / USMC Herringbone Monkey Pants
It is based on the M44 model adopted by the US Marine Corps in the 1940s, nicknamed Monkey Pants. The herringbone twill with its strong ridges is also faithfully reproduced, and the length is set short to take full advantage of the deep and loose rise. Another highlight is the chrysanthemum holes on the waistband and hem, which are made using a rare sewing machine.

These jeans are a reproduction of the tapered jeans of the 1960s. The rise is slightly higher, giving them more room around the waist and a slightly tapered silhouette. Cerebrating 150 years
GREENEBAUM BROTHERS Levi Strauss & Company obtained a patent for "Method of using metal rivets to reinforce clothing pockets'' on May 20 1873, 150 years ago. A year later, on August 25, 1874, Greenbaum Brothers, also located in San Francisco, received a patent for reinforcing stress points with leather. Until the 1890s, when the patent for rivets expired, Greenbaum Brothers' pants were supplied as durable workwear throughout the mining-rich West and Midwest. Greenbaum Brothers will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2024. They have recreated the original 19th century design, "Leatherbound Overalls,'' and the original "Two-by-One Denim,'' which stands out from the rest.

Warehouse & Co. Lot 2214 / 1880 Heavy Leather Bound Blouse
It is no exaggeration to say that this short-type "blouse" is the origin of the "Denim jacket." The shoulder line is sewn in a straight line, leaving no sleeve seam, so the shoulders naturally drop when worn, and the fabric gathers like an accordion under the armpits. This is also a characteristic of the fading of the color from that period. The pockets are also symmetrically placed, which is rare for workwear of this era. The front placket has buttonholes, and the shirt holes on the body are vertical, while only the obi part is horizontal. Like the pullover, the silhouette matches perfectly with Greenbaum denim, so you can wear it with a unique drape.

This is a classic wear house body knitted on an old-fashioned low gauge knitting machine that is said to be "rare than a loop knitting machine". This fabric is knitted with #12 uneven yarn to create a unique shadow, and is called a shadow border, and although it is plain, it has a slight horizontal unevenness.
