Crafted from a moderately thick, irregularly textured yarn, it offers both comfort and strength. While it has undergone minor changes each season as a staple item, it has now been decided that the fabric and specifications used with the 18/-OE fabric will continue to be used in the future, making it a truly timeless standard. For the Spring/Summer 2025 season, a fresh new design makes its debut—this time inspired by the original merchandise of a local skate shop, a beloved gathering spot for the community. Featuring “Banana boy” as the shop’s quirky mascot, the design captures the laid-back, authentic spirit of grassroots skate culture.
“The Tough Neck”
Thanks to the 360-degree double binder stitching, this design not only adds a stylish accent but also results in a tough, durable piece that embodies the ideal BARNS OUTFITTERS spirit. This construction effectively minimizes neck stretching and distortion, common issues with T-shirts. The fabric uses 18-count OE (Open End) yarn, which contains more air within the fibers, offering excellent moisture absorption and quick-drying properties. Additionally, the coarse texture of the OE yarn adds a rugged, authentic feel that is characteristic of BARNS OUTFITTERS.

The history of Hawaiian workwear, which can be considered the origin of the Aloha shirt, began when Japanese immigrants crossed the ocean and started living in Hawaii. The work they did there required durable workwear, rather than the traditional Japanese clothing they had brought from Japan. In 1922, Yasuda Kayoji, born in Japan, founded Union Supply, successfully expanding its business by providing high-quality workwear. The company's palaka check shirts and blouses, while simply made, were durable and easy to move in, quickly gaining popularity and becoming a representative style of palaka.

Founded in 1922 by Yasuda Kayoji, born in Japan, Union Supply expanded its business by providing high-quality, affordable workwear to people who had moved from Japan to Hawaii. While primarily a clothing manufacturer, the company also acted as a distributor, importing fabrics and other materials from Japan.

This is a classic wear house body knitted on an old-fashioned low gauge knitting machine that is said to be "rare than a loop knitting machine". This fabric is knitted with #12 uneven yarn to create a unique shadow, and is called a shadow border, and although it is plain, it has a slight horizontal unevenness.
