Hawaii is the island where the headquarters of the US Navy's 7th Fleet is located and where all US military bases are located. Since many soldiers have been stationed in Hawaii for a long time, local workwear manufacturers and tailors have also played the role of contractors supplying uniforms and combat clothing to soldiers. Taking advantage of this background, they developed work pants with a different fabric based on military trousers. These were also popular among Hawaiian railroaders. HAWAIIAN WORK WEARAfter Japanese immigrants came to Hawaii, the first place they were given to work was the sugar cane plantation. There was a railroad there for a long time, and it was used as a means of transporting harvested sugar cane to sugar mills and as a means of transportation between their living base and the plantation. While unraveling the history of Hawaiian workwear, Sunsurf focused on a railroad company that existed in the past called the "Hilo Railroad Company". Based on documents from that time, we will reproduce its unique specifications. Made in Japan

Sun Surf Lot SS39325 / Toyokuni III SPECIAL EDITION Imayo Mitarisa Farmers

SGD379.00
This work depicts Uoei, an illustrated book wholesaler dealing in nishikie (colored woodblock prints), which had a shop in what is now Ueno Hirokoji during the late Edo period. It is a gorgeous work depicting only women as "merchants" of the four classes: samurai, farmers, artisans, and merchants. The large letters "Azuma Nishikie" are dyed on the shop curtain in front of the store, proving that nishikie was a popular Edo specialty. Looking inside the store, there are paintings of actors and landscapes lined up, and on the left wall there is an advertisement for One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Uoei was a very popular illustrated book wholesaler, publishing many nishikie prints by famous artists such as Utagawa Hiroshige, Hiroshige II, and Toyokuni III, the artist of this work. Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), who created this ukiyo-e, was born in 1786 to a lumber wholesaler in Honjo, Edo. His distinctive portraits of beautiful women made him an instant hit. Furthermore, his actor paintings were highly acclaimed, and he was considered to have surpassed even his master, Utagawa Toyokuni I. He also had a strong desire to create art, and is said to have left behind the most works of any ukiyo-e artist of his time, with over 10,000 pieces. Japanese Design National Treasure of Japan Focusing on the artists of the Edo period, when Japanese culture and arts further expanded, this exhibition recreates the works of these masters on the canvas of an aloha shirt, bringing to life in the present day the passion that went into Japan's world-famous designs. This series, which began as a collaboration with the works of Katsushika Hokusai, is now taking on the next stage with the addition of new artists. ©️Tokyo National Museum Made in Japan

Sun Surf Lot US15901 / Union Supply Palaka Check Shirt Blouse

SGD299.00
The history of Hawaiian workwear, which can be considered the origin of the Aloha shirt, began when Japanese immigrants crossed the ocean and started living in Hawaii. The work they did there required durable workwear, rather than the traditional Japanese clothing they had brought from Japan. In 1922, Yasuda Kayoji, born in Japan, founded Union Supply, successfully expanding its business by providing high-quality workwear. The company's palaka check shirts and blouses, while simply made, were durable and easy to move in, quickly gaining popularity and becoming a representative style of palaka. Complete Series of the Reproduction "UNION SUPPLY" Founded in 1922 by Yasuda Kayoji, born in Japan, Union Supply expanded its business by providing high-quality, affordable workwear to people who had moved from Japan to Hawaii. While primarily a clothing manufacturer, the company also acted as a distributor, importing fabrics and other materials from Japan. Made in Japan

Tailor Toyo Lot TT15520 / 1950s Souvenir Jacket KOSHO & CO Special Edition DRAGON & LANDSCAPE × DRAGON

Original price was: SGD1,119.00.Current price is: SGD783.30.
In honor of the zodiac sign of 2024, the dragon, the Year of the Dragon collection is a reproduction of a dragon pattern selected from a large number of vintage skajans. This time, as a special edition, Tailor Toyo reprint the "Printed Sukajan", which was only made for a short period of time from the late 1940's to the early 1950's. The surface is embroidered with two dragons glaring at each other with Mt. Fuji in between. The design is not filled with embroidery, but the black acetate fabric used as the base is used effectively to make the dragon drawn with delicately colored threads stand out. When we look into the materials from the time, we find that it was created by a skilled Japanese embroidery craftsman, and it has a dignified finish that makes it look like a Japanese painting. The original vintage specifications have been reproduced, including the dragon embroidery on the chest, which is larger than usual, and the three lines on the sleeves. The reversible side has a printed Japan map pattern. Instead of printing using modern machines, printing is done by hand, in which a plate is created one color at a time, and then the plates are printed over and over again by hand. This method requires time, effort, and advanced technology, so it was not possible to print at the time. Very few. Moreover, this design, which features a map of Japan along with castles and landscapes, is especially rare among printed Skajan jackets, and it is no exaggeration to say that it is impossible to obtain on the vintage market. The dragon on the chest is drawn in a size that would be impossible to find on an embroidered Sukajan jacket, and due to its powerful design and vintage rarity, it has been reprinted as a special edition for the Year of the Dragon. “KOSHO & CO.” SPECIAL EDITION This special edition is a reproduction of carefully selected masterpieces from Taylor Toyo's collection with great attention to detail. In addition to the detailed designs drawn with horizontal embroidery, the acetate fabric is adjusted to create a vintage-like finish, and the wool ribs are knitted one by one using an old-fashioned flat knitting machine. For the reversible zippers, we restarted the fastening machines that were used more than 50 years ago and recreated the same hand-bending ones that were used back then. Using the label of Kosho Shokai, the predecessor of Taylor Toyo, the finish is reminiscent of the heyday of vintage skajans. Made in Japan
